ADEE SIG Feedback: Artificial Intelligence: Friend or Foe in the Assessment of Dental Students?

Session synopsis: 
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a growing phenomenon which is likely to facilitate wholesale multi-faceted changes in the healthcare professions, including dentistry. In dental education, AI has already made fundamental and irreversible changes  to many aspects of dental student assessment.

For dental educators to be properly prepared for the advent of AI, teachers will need to be well versed and well prepared with its potential role in learning and teaching, and the extent to which it will impact on student education (Master’s, 2019). In this fast-moving arena, an improved understanding of AI is needed to enable dental students and their teachers to adapt to these changes effectively, both within and beyond dental education (Saghiri, Vakhnovetsky, Nadershahi, 2022).

Following on from the well-received and successful SIG formats adopted  in previous years, a similar approach will be used  as follows:  
A) A bespoke questionnaire will be completed by  ADEE Educators to determine their:

  1. demographic details, knowledge and experience of AI,
  2. perceptions of how  student assessment will change with the use of AI , and
  3. potential apprehensions and concerns with  the use of AI.

The questionnaire will be distributed through the ADEE office and via social media sites specifically linked to ADEE.

Qualitative and quantitative data will be collected from attending delegates during the proposed SIG at the ADEE conference 2024 through a series of themed Focus Groups. Three themed focus groups will investigate:

  1. The levels of knowledge Dental Educators have about AI and how this approach could be more widely adopted to facilitate dental student assessment and learning
  2. The main concerns Dental Educators have about AI and how these can be mitigated.
  3. How the assessment of dental students could be designed and delivered to obviate the potential adverse impacts of AI       

The analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data will be undertaken using descriptive and thematic approaches, respectively.

Albert Leung

Professor of Dental Education and Head of Continuing Professional Development
UCL Eastman Dental Institute, UK

Professor Leung is the Foundation Head of the School of Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland, University of Medicine and Health Sciences (RCSI). Sponsored by the Irish government, he is leading the 2025 launch of a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme, which will become the first community-based undergraduate dentistry degree in Ireland, and the first new undergraduate dentistry programme in over a century.

Professor Leung qualified as a dentist from Dundee University (BDS), received an LLM from Cardiff University, an MA from King’s College London and a PhD from Portsmouth University. He holds the Fellowship in General Dental Surgery from RCSI, Fellowship in Dental Surgery from RCS England, and Fellowship in Dental Surgery from RCPS Glasgow. He is a Fellow of the College of General Dentistry, the Higher Education Academy, and the International College of Dentists. 

His main pedagogic research is in novel teaching techniques and assessment methodologies. His expertise is in integrated restorative based total patient care, innovations in dental education and the development of effective feedback tools to facilitate high quality teaching and learning. He publishes widely in dental education and restorative dental practice.

Professor Leung is a successful international dental educator with notable and consistent cooperative teaching, assessment, curriculum development and capacity building successes in three continents. Has an extensive international academic leadership, strategic, innovation, change management and capacity building portfolio in Dentistry. He has a strong track record on successful developments of new dental programmes, liaising with statutory and funding authorities, fostering collaborations across different jurisdictions. 

He was Professor of Dental Education, Head of Continuing Professional Development and Programme Director of the Restorative Dental Practice Masters at University College London (UCL) Eastman Dental Institute, having successfully supervised over 100 Masters' Dissertations. He has been the Academic Lead and Chief Examiner in clinical skills (dental manikin) for the UK General Dental Council's (GDC) Overseas Registration Examination (ORE) since 2016, having been an Examiner since 2004. He also Chairs the ORE2 Board for the Consortium which comprises the UCL Eastman Dental Institute, Queen Mary University of London, and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.     

Professor Leung served as Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry RCSI between 2020-2023, and was RCSI Vice Chancellor's Strategic Advisor between 2023-2024. He has achieved international distinction including receipt of the Association for Dental Education (ADEE) Excellence in Dental Education Mature Career Award in 2017.

Professor Leung is an External Examiner for the Peninsula Dental School, University of Plymouth. He is on the Editorial Board for the Journal Of Dentistry, and the Jordan Journal of Dentistry. He is on the Dental Schools' Council of Great Britain and Ireland.

Professor Leung received the Association of Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) Mature Career Dental Educator Award in 2017.

Chris Louca

Director and Head
University of Portsmouth Dental Academy

Professor Chris Louca BDS, BSc, PhD, AKC, FFD RCSI, FCGDent is the Director and Head of the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy. He is responsible for the undergraduate and postgraduate education of dentists, dental therapists, dental hygienists and dental nurses, with a strong emphasis on intra-and inter-professional learning. Chris has over 30 years’ experience of teaching, research, innovation and international accreditation/consultancy in dentistry. His previous academic posts include King’s College London and UCL Eastman Dental Institute. He has supervised 8 PhD and over 90 MSc students and his current PG students are researching topics in dental education, dental public health, and dental materials. He presents his work regularly at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) and other international conferences. Chris has published over 90 original articles in dental peer reviewed journals. He received the ADEE Mature Career Dental Educator Award in 2015.

Ingrid Tonni

Associate researcher
Dental School of University of Brescia in Italy

Dr Ingrid Tonni holds an Associate research position at the Dental School of University of Brescia in Italy, where she works in the orthodontic and gnathological departments and she has the assignment: "Orthodontic management of patients with cleft lip and palate". She obtained her PhD in 2011 following completion of a part-time study programme at Cardiff University looking at the development of agreed learning outcomes and the associated use and perceived value of a reflective E-Portfolio in a Specialist Orthodontic Training Programme. She has been a teacher at the the Dental School of University of Brescia in Italy for more than 10 years, supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students. She received the Association of Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) Young Career Dental Educator Award in 2015.  She presents her work regularly at national and international conferences and is author of several publications. Ingrid Tonni’s current research interests include education (assessment and feedback), orthodontics, asymmetry, gnathology, and Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. 

Peter Fine

Deputy Director of the Restorative Dental Practice programme
UCL Eastman Dental Institute

Dr Peter Fine is Deputy Director of the Restorative Dental Practice programme at UCL Eastman Dental Institute, UK. He is also Director of the Master’s Degree in Sports Dentistry-Oral Health in Sport at UCL Eastman Dental Institute. He has supervised over 80 MSc projects at UCL Eastman Dental Institute and has lectured throughout the world in both educational and sports dentistry research topics. His current interests in educational research include the role of feedback in ongoing dental education; and in sports dentistry, his research interests include the use of mouthguards as performance enhancing devises and changes to salivary pH during exercise.

Dr Fine received the Association of Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) Mature Career Dental Educator Award in 2019.

 

Learning Outcomes: 

This Special Interest Group (SIG) will reflect upon the rich data already collected from ADEE Educators on feedback and assessment over the last five years. Participants will be invited to discuss and reflect on:

  1. The benefits and challenges of integrating AI into student assessment in dental schools, and
  2. How methods of assessment will need to change as a result of the introduction of AI and the impact on student education and learning
