Sustainability within the Graduating European Dentist Curriculum
Session synopsis: 

The SIG for sustainability will aim to provide delegates with an update on the SIG activity to date, including the development of learning outcomes for each domain of the Graduating European Dentist curriculum. Delegates will be reminded of the value and importance of educating our students about sustainability and sustainable development goals in relation to oral health care. They will also have the opportunity to discuss how they might utilise the suggested learning outcomes, embed them in their local curricula, and set up assessment opportunities within the spirit of constructive alignment.

Brett Duane

Associate Professor in Dental Public Health
Dublin Dental University Hospital, Trinity College Dublin

Dr Brett Duane is Associate Professor in Dental Public Health at Trinity College Dublin and a leading expert in sustainable healthcare. Originally from New Zealand, he holds degrees in dentistry (University of Otago), health management (University of Newcastle, Australia), public health (University of Glasgow), and a PhD in dentistry from the University of Turku. His early career included public health roles in Australia and Scotland, and he later served as Consultant in Dental Public Health with Public Health England. At Trinity, he leads research and teaching on the environmental sustainability of oral healthcare and co-developed Ireland’s first postgraduate programme in dental public health.

Brett is the coordinator of KitNewCare, a €6 million EU Horizon project focused on reducing the environmental impact of kidney care. He has published over 150 articles, including foundational research on the carbon footprint of dental procedures and a landmark series in the British Dental Journal. Internationally recognised, he has delivered keynote addresses at major conferences and advises professional and academic bodies on integrating sustainability into clinical practice. His work combines life-cycle assessment with systems thinking to drive low-carbon, equitable healthcare transformation.

James Field

Professor in Restorative Dentistry and Dental Education
Cardiff University

Prof James Field is currently a Professor in Restorative Dentistry and Dental Education and also the Cardiff University School of Dentistry's Director of Digital Education. He is a long-term active member of ADEE having most recently co-chaired the very successful Bridging the Clinical Gap special interest group and workshop.

James is academic lead for the ADEE European DigEdDent (Digital Education in Dentistry) portal, was lead author for the ADEE's Graduating European Dentist Curriculum Taskforce and Global lead for Shaping The Future of Dental Education: Interprofessional Education stream. He also represents Cardiff University as the trans-national partner in O-Health-Edu, an Erasmus+ K2 project to harmonise dental education across Europe.

  • Insight into the development of learning outcomes for inclusion of sustainability in the undergraduate curriculum
  • Understand the growing importance of inclusion of sustainability and sustainable practices within the curriculum
