Session synopsis: 
The theme of ADEE 2010 held in Amsterdam the Netherland was 'Digital  Dentistry - A Space Odyssey'.

Throughout then 2010 meeting much discussion and learning was shared in the areas of simulation based education, virtual reality and robotics and other technologies in dental education. A generation later the advancements in these technologies and of course the arrival of AI is seeing the role and inclusion of such technologies being discussed both positivity and negatively in the current education agenda.

This session brings together some of ADEE's corporate partners in a panel discussion to explore how technological advances have changing how we teach and treat patients in oral health professionals education and how academic corporate collaborations continue to drive and evolve advancement.

Carlos Serrano

Chair of Digital Dentistry and General Oral Care

Dr. Carlos M. Serrano graduated as a dentist (DDS) from the University of Concepción in Chile in 2004. He obtained his master's degree in medical education (MMedEd) in 2010 and completed his specialty in Prosthodontics (MClinPros) in 2012. In 2023, he received his PhD, with research focused on the applications of extended reality (XR) and digital dentistry in dental education.

Since 2015, Carlos has been a member of ACTA’s Digital Dentistry department, where he specializes in the development and integration of digital technologies into dental education and patient care. He has also been actively involved in the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) since 2015, contributing to the international advancement of digital dentistry education. His work with ADEE includes developing and promoting initiatives that enhance the integration of emerging digital technologies into dental curricula, as well as collaborating with international institutions to improve dental education standards.

Carlos is also actively involved in research and dental education, particularly at the intersection of digital dentistry and extended reality, with a focus on reshaping the future of dental education and clinical practice.

Marjoke Vervoorn

Marjoke Vervoorn graduated in 1982 (DDS, University of Utrecht, NL), completed her PhD in 1992 (University of Groningen, NL) and since 1992 she is connected to the Academic Centre of Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). She was Director of Education at ACTA from 2005 till 2013.

Currently she is involved in Research and Development of Dental Education with focus on learning environment and development and implementation of new technologies in dental training. Also she is involved in the Assessment Procedures for re-registration of dentists in the Netherlands and for non-EU dentists.
