Session synopsis: 

Designing assessments in a modern dental program requires careful planning to ensure graduates are safe to enter the workforce, first-day ready for independent practice. Determining the appropriate assessment type, one that is both credible and trustworthy, to ensure a meaningful measurement of student ability is challenging.

Through a series of presentations and activities this workshop will:

Educate participants about the evidence-based approaches to identifying and using appropriate dental assessments

Describe the benefits, and challenges, of the various assessment types in dental education settings

Support participants to develop, or evaluate, a framework for a whole of program assessment blueprint

Draw on real-life experiences to help participants how to influence assessment reform using change management principles.

Programme: 

5 minutes – Presentation - Introduction of the session

10 minutes – Group discussion – Initial prompt - Describe your assessment issues and what you hope to get from the session.

20 minutes – Presentation - Descriptions of evidence-based dental assessments, pros and cons. What to choose and when.

15 minutes – Group discussion – Initial prompt – Are you using the right assessment combination in the right place, at the right time, or did this presentation provoke ideas for change?

20 minutes – Presentation – Where to start when creating an assessment blueprint, how to implement a new blueprint into an existing program.

10 minutes – Group discussion – In pairs or groups of three – describe to each other your assessment blueprint, what support do you need to create one. Consider using the provided template to support your blueprint design.

10 minutes – Presentation – The presenters will describe their current process of assessment reform at their institutions and offer solutions to support others embarking on a similar process.

Professor Dawson's notable achievements in dental education include leading the small team that created LiftUpp, a groundbreaking digital tool that revolutionised student assessment and development practices in the dental teaching clinics in the UK. His leadership in education has earned him national recognition, including a National Teaching Fellowship and a Fellowship by election with the Royal College of Surgeons of England for services to dental education. Professor Dawson also brings experience from his extensive work with the General Dental Council, having served as Chair of the Overseas Registration Examination Advisory Group.

Clare McNally

University of Melbourne, Australia
Academic Lead for Assessment and Evaluation.

Clare is responsible for the assessment reform project in the MDS curriculum redesign. By developing a programmatic approach to assessment and introducing an entrustable professional activity framework for final year students, Clare is hoping to position the Melbourne Dental School (MDS) is a global leader in dental education and assessment. Clare's PhD at the University of Adelaide explored the relationship between oral health and systemic health in hospitalised older people. In addition to her academic role, Clare is the senior dental hygienist in the Oral Medicine Department at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne helping patients with significant mucosal diseases prevent common dental conditions.

Learning Outcomes: 

Use an evidence-based approach to select the most appropriate assessment type to measure different clinical competencies.

Design (or evaluate an existing) assessment blueprint for validity, reliability and to ensure all competencies are assessed.

Develop a change management process for implementing or adapting assessments at your institution.
