Session synopsis: 
Undergraduate students and graduate dentists find endodontics a particularly challenging and stressful areas of dentistry.

The aim of this joint ADEE/ESE symposium is to discuss the implications of the new undergraduate curriculum, while considering exacerbators and modifiers for student stress in endodontics. Finally, there will be a discussion about how we can best integrate new research into endodontics teaching and ultimately a change to clinical practice using vital pulp treatment as an example.

Academic Professor and Consultant in Endodontics
Dublin Dental University Hospital, Trinity College Dublin

Prof Hal Duncan received his dental degree from the University of Glasgow and his 4-year endodontic speciality training in Guy’s Hospital, King’s College London. For ten years, he worked part-time in specialist referral endodontic practice. He completed his PhD in the University of Birmingham. As an Academic Professor and Consultant in Endodontics, he has led endodontic teaching, service delivery and research in Dublin Dental University Hospital (DDUH) for the last 17 years. He has published over 180 international peer-reviewed scientific articles, 50 research abstracts, 18 book chapters as well as editing 3 textbooks. He was the primary author of the recent European Society of Endodontology (ESE) position statement on ‘Management of deep caries and the exposed pulp’ and is the lead of the ‘ESE S3-level Guidelines for the Treatment of Endodontic Disease’. He is the current Editor-in-Chief of the International Endodontic Journal. In DDUH, he currently maintains a research lab and is the principal supervisor of clinical and scientifically trained PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in his research area of interest basic and translational pulp biology and endodontics. Currently, he is the Director of Research in the DDUH, the President of the ESE, the Ex-President of the Irish Division of the IADR and the Past-President of the Pulp Biology and Regeneration Group of the IADR and the Irish Endodontic Society.

Valérie Chevalier

Associate Professor Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics
University of Western Brittany in Brest

Prof Valérie Chevalier is an Associate Professor at the University of Western Brittany in Brest (UBO), practicing in Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics. With an interest in both teaching and research, her primary research focus is on student stress in endodontics, to improve educational experiences for dental students. Additionally, Valérie Chevalier is a Committee Member of the European Society of Endodontology Membership Committee and an Associate Editor for the Journal Clinical and Experimental Dental Research.

Fadi Jarad

Consultant in Restorative Dentistry
University of Liverpool, School of Dentistry, UK

Professor Fadi Jarad is a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and Professor at the University of Liverpool, where he also serves as Director of Postgraduate Programmes. He qualified in Dental Surgery in 1997 and completed a PhD at Queen’s University Belfast in 2001. He joined the University of Liverpool in 2003 and was appointed Professor in 2017.

Prof. Jarad is Chair of the Education and Scholarship Committee of the European Society of Endodontology (ESE), where he leads collaborative efforts to enhance educational standards and promote scholarly activity across Europe. His current work includes the development and dissemination of updated undergraduate and postgraduate curricula in dentistry, with a particular focus on endodontic education. Additionally, he leads the ESE accreditation and reaccreditation process for the postgraduate Endodontic training programmes across Europe.

His recent publications explore innovations in dental education, including the integration of coaching to support student learning and the application of digital tools to assess the complexity of endodontic cases. He has also contributed to clinical research in endodontic treatment modalities and the management of dental trauma.

Prof. Jarad is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the International Team for Implantology (ITI). In addition to his academic roles, he is Director of Sandstone and Sunlight Dental Practices in the Wirral, where he provides specialist dental care to the local community. Outside of his professional commitments, he enjoys cooking, baking sourdough bread, travelling, and spending time with his family and his dog Alfie.
